Hungry Pig wins national award

Hungy Pig has won the Australian Lend Lease "innovation showcase" award for 2011, which automatically establishes the technology and the larger organics management system as a finalist in the Lend Lease global awards.

There is significant interest in on-site food waste management and the Hungy Pig technology. Currently we have one (award winning) installation at Erina Fair shopping centre in Australia and are working to iron out the wrinkles, to optimise the composting process at maximum throughput, and to quantify net greenhouse benefit.

The compost produced at the facility is of high quality and is in high demand, the top dressing lawn application trial has delivered excellent performance.

We have had to replace a main bearing which has not performed to the manufacturer's claims, and are watching the performance of the replacement with great interest.

We will be promoting the Hungry Pig for wider application only once we are confident the technology will deliver reliable performance with minimum labour requirement. At that point you will know about it.

Note that the Hungry Pig installation is not the only option available, but was very suited the requirements of Erina Fair. The project began with a review of waste management and dock management at the shopping centre, and the development of an action plan. One item in the action plan was to evaluate options and to document a costed plan for managing the organic waste that comprosed well over 50% of the waste stream from the centre.
